Key Scriptures
“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”
—1 John 4:9, NKJV
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
—1 John 4:11, NKJV
Introduction
Good morning, brothers and sisters!
We all long to be loved. Especially when we are hurt, tired, or misunderstood, we need acceptance and understanding. Our heavenly Father knows our needs. His love welcomes us back into His presence, where we can receive comfort, healing, and restoration.
But today, 1 John chapter 4 also leads us forward: after receiving the Father’s love, how do we live it out?
At that time, the church was troubled by false teaching and had experienced division. John first reminded believers to test the teaching they heard. He then explained that the Father had revealed His love by sending Jesus Christ to save us. Since we have been loved in this way, we also ought to love one another.
How we understand Jesus Christ affects how we understand the Father’s love. How we receive the Father’s love also affects how we treat the people around us.
So today, let us learn from 1 John chapter 4 how to live out the love that comes from God.
- Hold Firm to the Truth About Christ and Recognise the Foundation of Love (4:1–6)
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
—1 John 4:1, NKJV
John reminds believers that we must examine messages that claim to come from God. We cannot simply accept everything we hear.
False prophets include people who claim to speak for God but teach what is false. Their words may be attractive. They may claim to have special spiritual abilities or experiences. Yet none of these things is sufficient to prove that their teaching is true.
How should we test their teaching? John directs our attention to Jesus Christ:
“By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God.”
—1 John 4:2, NKJV
Jesus Christ is the Father’s Son. He truly became human and came among us. His birth, His life, His suffering, and His death were real.
Teaching led by the Holy Spirit will acknowledge the Jesus Christ revealed in Scripture. Verse 3 explains that the spirit that does not confess Jesus Christ is not from God, but is the spirit of the Antichrist.
How does this relate to knowing the Father’s love?
Verses 9 and 10 tell us that the Father revealed His love by sending Jesus Christ into the world to be the propitiation for our sins.
Our understanding of the Father’s love must be rooted in Jesus Christ and the salvation He accomplished for us.
If a teaching speaks continually about love and spiritual experiences but denies who Jesus Christ is or sets aside His saving work, it has departed from the gospel John proclaimed.
Verse 5 explains that those who belong to the world speak from the world’s perspective, and the world listens to them. Therefore, popularity alone does not establish that a teaching is true. Verse 6 reminds us that those who know God listen to the apostles’ testimony.
Today, we need to return to Scripture and test the messages we hear against the truth proclaimed by the apostles.
Knowledge, theories, and methods can help us. But we need to examine ourselves: do we only ask whether a method works, without considering whether it agrees with the Lord’s Word? Are we relying more and more on human ability, while praying less, trusting Jesus Christ less, and depending less on the Holy Spirit?
In the face of false teaching, John also reassures believers:
“He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
—1 John 4:4, NKJV
We can depend on the Holy Spirit who lives within us and hold firm to the truth about Christ. We do not have to be carried along by deceptive voices.
As we recognise the Saviour whom the Father has sent, we can understand more clearly the love the Father has revealed through Him.
- Receive the Father’s Love and Allow Our Wounded Lives to Be Renewed (4:7–16)
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”
—1 John 4:7, NKJV
John identifies God Himself as the source of love. Verse 8 goes further: the person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
How do we come to understand this love? John directs us to the Father’s sending of Jesus Christ:
“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”
—1 John 4:9, NKJV
The Father sent His only begotten Son. Jesus Christ came into the world so that we might live through Him.
Verse 10 explains further:
“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
—1 John 4:10, NKJV
The Father took the initiative to love us and sent Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ willingly laid down His life, bearing our sins so that we could be reconciled to the Father.
The love this chapter first reveals is redeeming love. Our sins needed forgiveness. Our relationship with the Father needed restoration. Jesus Christ accomplished this for us.
When we could not save ourselves, the Father already loved us. We did not earn this love through our achievements, our ministry, or our performance.
As we truly believe this love, our inner lives begin to be renewed.
Some people constantly feel that they are not good enough. They believe they must keep doing more to deserve acceptance. Others have been hurt and have learned to hide themselves, finding it difficult to trust anyone. Some appear strong on the outside but are filled with loneliness and insecurity within.
We can bring these realities before our heavenly Father. He cherishes us and continues to work in our lives. Through His Word, He teaches us to understand who we are and to receive the grace He has given us in Jesus Christ.
Verse 13 says:
“By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.”
—1 John 4:13, NKJV
The Father has given us the Holy Spirit so that we can know we have a real relationship with Him. We can depend on the Holy Spirit to expose the lies, bitterness, self-centredness, and fear within us, and to help us be renewed in the truth.
Verses 14 and 15 again explain that the Father sent the Son as the Saviour of the world, and that whoever confesses Jesus as the Son of God abides in God. Receiving the Father’s love is therefore closely connected with believing in Jesus Christ and depending on the Holy Spirit.
“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us.”
—1 John 4:16a, NKJV
Today, do we believe that our heavenly Father loves us in this way? Are we willing to open the wounded and weak places of our lives to Him?
The Father’s healing and restoration are precious in themselves because we are His beloved children. At the same time, He leads us into further growth, allowing His love to change how we treat others.
- Respond to the Father’s Love by Loving Our Brothers and Sisters at a Cost (4:17–21; see also 4:11–12)
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
—1 John 4:11 (NKJV)
This verse clearly connects receiving love with putting love into practice.
Our heavenly Father’s love heals our wounded hearts, restores our lives as His children, and helps us learn to love others again. Therefore, we need to move from asking, “Am I loved?” to asking, “How can I share the love I have received?”
Verse 12 tells us that when we love one another, God’s love is perfected in us. This shows us that loving one another is an important expression of His love reaching its intended purpose in our lives.
We do not need to wait until we are completely healed before we begin to love others. As our heavenly Father continues to restore us, we can depend on the Holy Spirit and learn to forgive, listen, care, and give.
1 John 4:17–18
These verses explain that as love matures in us, we can face the day of judgment with confidence.
In this context, the fear John addresses is primarily the fear of judgment and punishment. Because of the salvation Jesus Christ has accomplished, we can trust in Him and come confidently before our heavenly Father.
The assurance that we are loved and accepted can also help us face our fears in relationships.
Sometimes we hesitate to love because we are afraid of losing out, being rejected, or being hurt again. We can bring these fears before our heavenly Father and ask the Holy Spirit to help us take a step of love, guided by truth and appropriate boundaries.
1 John 4:19
We give from our identity as people who are already loved. Our heavenly Father has loved us, and Jesus Christ has laid down His life for us. Therefore, we can depend on the Holy Spirit and learn to give willingly.
Love is not a transaction. It does not wait for a guaranteed return before giving. Yet love does involve a cost. It may require us to give our time, accept inconvenience, admit our mistakes, and be willing to listen to the needs of others.
1 John 4:20
John teaches that our love for our heavenly Father must be reflected in our attitudes and actions towards His children.
If we continually speak about how much love we have experienced, yet allow hatred to rule our hearts and refuse to love those around us, we need to come honestly before the Lord and examine ourselves.
Today, love may mean listening patiently until a family member has finished speaking. It may mean sincerely apologising to someone we have hurt. It may mean giving our time and practical help to a brother or sister in need.
1 John 4:21
Loving our brothers and sisters is a command we have received from God. Through these practical acts of obedience, the love our heavenly Father has given us becomes visible fruit in our lives.
Conclusion
Brothers and sisters, our heavenly Father first loved us. He sent Jesus Christ to save us and gave us the Holy Spirit so that we might abide in Him and live a life of love for one another.
Therefore, we must hold firmly to the truth of Jesus Christ and understand the foundation of love. We must receive our heavenly Father’s love and allow our inner lives to be renewed. And we must depend on the Holy Spirit, willingly paying the cost of loving those around us.
Our heavenly Father treasures each one of us. Every part of our lives that needs healing matters to Him. As He restores us, He also leads us forward, helping us grow from people who receive love into people who willingly share it.
Today, let us ask ourselves: Do I believe in the love our heavenly Father has revealed through Jesus Christ? Which areas of my life am I willing to let the Holy Spirit renew? What step can I take today towards someone around me who needs to be loved?
May we abide in our heavenly Father’s love, follow Jesus Christ, and depend on the Holy Spirit, putting the love we have received into practice.
