Key Scripture
“For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
—2 Peter 1:8, NKJV
Introduction
We believe in Jesus, and we want our lives to bear fruit. How does this faith show itself in our daily lives? Can our families, our fellow workers, and the people around us see that the Lord is changing our words, our attitudes, and our actions?
When Peter wrote this letter, he knew that his death was near. The church also faced the danger of false teachers and wrong teaching. Peter was concerned that, after he was gone, believers would continue to stand firm and follow the Lord faithfully.
This chapter carries the loving concern of a shepherd. Peter reminds believers to treasure the faith they have received, put it into practice, and pay attention to God’s Word so that they can keep growing.
To live a fruitful life, we first need to know the Lord and be rooted in Him.
- Know the Lord and Build a Firm Foundation
In verse 1, Peter describes his readers as people who have received “like precious faith” with the apostles.
This does not mean that everyone has the same level of faith or spiritual maturity. It means that the faith we have received is equally precious. We believe in the same Lord as the apostles, and we share in the same salvation.
Peter needed the Lord’s grace, and so do we. Each of us should treasure this faith and learn to trust Him.
Verse 1 tells us that we have received this faith through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. Verse 2 continues:
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.”
Our faith rests on who God is and on the salvation Jesus Christ has accomplished for us. As we know Him more deeply, we understand His faithfulness more clearly and learn to trust Him in daily life.
Verse 3 tells us that His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness. Verse 4 speaks of His great and precious promises. Through them, we can escape the corruption caused by sinful desires and become partakers of the divine nature.
God wants us to grow in holiness and love through His grace. He wants our lives to reflect His character.
Knowing the Lord must therefore reach into our everyday lives. We learn to depend on Him and respond to Him in real situations.
When pressure comes, we bring our worries to the Lord. When we make a decision, we consider His teaching. When our hearts are troubled, we return to His promises and receive direction.
Through these experiences, we come to know Him more deeply.
Today, let us turn our hearts towards Him. As our lives take root in the Lord, we receive what we need to grow.
- Practise Your Faith and Bear Fruit in Daily Life
Verse 5 says:
“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence…”
Peter has just spoken about God’s power and promises. Now he calls us to respond. Because we have received God’s grace, we should make every effort to put our faith into practice.
In verses 5 to 7, Peter speaks of faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.
These qualities show us how faith becomes visible in daily life.
With faith, we learn to do what is right. With knowledge, we make choices according to the truth. When emotions rise, we practise self-control. When things do not improve quickly, we learn perseverance. In our relationships, we care for fellow believers and love the people around us.
When a family member says something that upsets us, we can listen carefully before we respond. When a fellow worker has a different opinion, we can first seek to understand. When progress is slow, we can faithfully do what we need to do today.
These are the places where the fruit of our lives can grow.
Verse 8 tells us that, when these qualities are present and increasing in us, we will be neither barren nor unfruitful in our knowledge of Jesus Christ.
The truth we understand should gradually shape the way we speak, treat others, and carry out our responsibilities.
Verse 9 warns that anyone who lacks these qualities is short-sighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
When we forget the grace we have received, immediate concerns can fill our minds. We may feel that we must win the argument, that others must do things our way, or that we must get the result we want straight away.
Peter lifts our eyes towards the Lord’s everlasting kingdom.
In verse 10, he calls us to be even more diligent to make our call and election sure. As we keep growing in these qualities, our lives show that we belong to the Lord, and we become more firmly established in following Him.
Verse 11 continues:
“For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
We do not earn salvation through good behaviour. Because we belong to the Lord, we follow Him seriously and live today with eternity in view.
Growth takes daily practice. Today, let us choose one specific area in which to respond to the Lord: more self-control in our words, more patience as we wait, or more love towards another person.
With the Lord’s help, we can begin with one step today and allow our faith to bear fruit.
- Pay Attention to God’s Word and Walk Steadily Ahead
As we practise our faith and begin to bear fruit, we will still face difficulties and hear different voices. We need reliable guidance to keep us moving in the right direction.
In verse 12, Peter says that he will keep reminding the believers. They already know the truth and are established in it, but he still sees the need to remind them.
We need reminders too. We may have heard a truth many times, but under pressure or strong emotion, we can forget it. We need to return regularly to God’s Word and turn our hearts towards the Lord again.
In verses 13 and 14, Peter describes his body as a tent. He knows that the time to put off this tent is near.
A tent is a temporary place to live. Peter is speaking about his earthly body. His words also remind us that our time in this world is limited.
Peter cannot remain with the believers forever. So, in verse 15, he says that he will make every effort to help them remember these things after his death.
Pastors, teachers, and spiritual leaders can walk with us for a season. We also need to be rooted in the truth ourselves, so that we can follow the Lord throughout our lives.
In verses 16 to 18, Peter explains that his teaching about the power and coming of Jesus Christ is not based on cleverly invented stories. He personally saw the Lord’s majesty on the mountain. He also heard the Father declare that Jesus was His beloved Son.
The hope Peter proclaimed had a real foundation.
Verse 19 continues:
“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”
As we wait for the Lord’s return, God’s Word is like a light shining in a dark place. It helps us recognise the right direction and walk steadily ahead.
Verses 20 and 21 explain that prophecy did not come from human will. People spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
This is why we pay close attention to Scripture. God has spoken, and we should listen carefully and allow Him to guide us.
When someone presents an attractive teaching, we examine it through Scripture. When our own ideas differ from God’s Word, we allow Him to correct us. When the way ahead is unclear, we begin by obeying what we already understand.
Today, after reading Scripture, let us carry its teaching into our lives. God’s Word will guide our next step and help us keep growing and bearing fruit in the days ahead.
Conclusion
Second Peter chapter 1 leads us towards a fruitful life.
First, know the Lord and build a firm foundation. Treasure the precious faith we have received, and depend on His power and promises.
Then, practise your faith and bear fruit in daily life. Let self-control, perseverance, godliness, and love become part of the way we live.
Finally, pay attention to God’s Word and walk steadily ahead. During our limited time on earth, let His reliable truth guide us towards His everlasting kingdom.
Today, let us begin with one practical response: practise self-control where we are easily upset, show patience where we need to wait, and offer love to someone who needs our care.
As we know the Lord more deeply and obey His Word, may the people around us see His grace at work in our lives, and may all the glory go to Him.
