2026-07-10 Exodus 6 The Less We Understand, the More We Need to Know God

Theme Verse: “And God spoke to Moses and said to him: ‘I am the LORD.’” —Exodus 6:2, NKJV

Yesterday, in Exodus 5, we saw that after Moses obeyed God and went to Pharaoh, the situation did not improve. Instead, it became worse. Pharaoh increased the people’s workload, the Israelites blamed Moses, and Moses returned to God asking:

“Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me?” —Exodus 5:22, NKJV

Moses could not understand why obedience had led to greater difficulty. God had promised deliverance, but all he could see was deeper suffering and a harder Pharaoh. Yet Moses still returned to God. In Exodus 6, God began to answer him. But God did not first explain the whole process or tell Moses when Pharaoh would let the people go.

God first said: “I am the LORD.”

Moses kept seeing Pharaoh’s power, so God brought him back to see who the LORD is. Moses kept hearing the people’s complaints, so God caused him to hear His promises again. Moses kept saying, “I cannot,” but God kept reminding him, “I am the LORD.”

When we do not understand what God is doing, He may not immediately give us every answer. Often, He first brings us back to Himself. The less we understand, the more we need to know God.

  1. Turn Your Eyes Back to God

“Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh.” —Exodus 6:1

Moses saw only failure. Pharaoh had become harder, the people were suffering more, and his words seemed to have changed nothing. But God said: “Now you shall see what I will do.”

In Exodus 5, Moses saw what Pharaoh had done. In Exodus 6, God called him to see what God was about to do. God was not asking Moses to deny reality. He was asking him not to allow present reality to become his final conclusion. When circumstances become worse, we may think there is no hope, prayer has not worked, and God is doing nothing. But what we see now is not always the end of the story. When you do not understand, turn your eyes away from the circumstances and look again at who God is.

  1. Listen to God Again

“I will bring you out… I will rescue you… I will redeem you… I will take you as My people, and I will be your God.” —Exodus 6:6–7

God repeatedly said: “I will.” I will bring you out. I will rescue you. I will redeem you. I will take you as My people. I will be your God. The focus was not on what Israel could do, but on what God would do.

Yet the people could not receive Moses’ words because of their anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. They had suffered for so long that they no longer had the strength to receive hope. Sometimes we are like this. Pressure is heavy, waiting is long, and disappointment makes God’s promise difficult to receive.

But the people’s inability to listen did not make God’s promise ineffective. Their response did not determine whether His Word was true. When your heart is confused, do not listen only to fear, disappointment, or the voices around you. Listen again to what God has said.

  1. Acknowledge God Again

“The children of Israel have not heeded me. How then shall Pharaoh heed me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?” —Exodus 6:12

Moses still struggled. He thought, “If my own people will not listen to me, how will Pharaoh listen?” Once again, he focused on his own weakness: “I am of uncircumcised lips.” Moses kept saying: “I cannot.” But God kept saying: “I am the LORD.”

God did not tell Moses to believe in himself. He told Moses to trust the One who had sent him. Moses was still weak, but God’s calling had not changed. Moses was still afraid, but God’s plan had not stopped. The genealogy in this chapter confirms that the men God sent were these real and limited men—Moses and Aaron.

They were not used because they had no weakness. They were used because God had chosen and sent them. Faith does not deny our limitations. Faith acknowledges God again in the middle of them. It is not: “I can certainly do this.” It is: “The God who sent me is still in control.”

Exodus 6 does not show us that Moses had already overcome all his fears. At the end of the chapter, he was still saying: “I am of uncircumcised lips.” This chapter shows us a patient God who continued to lead Moses away from: “I cannot,” and back to: “I am the LORD.”

Perhaps today you still do not understand why things have not improved after you obeyed, why you are still waiting after praying, or why God’s promise seems so different from present reality.

But remember: You may not yet see what God is doing, but you can look again at who God is. You may not understand the whole process, but you can listen again to His promises. You may not feel capable, but you can acknowledge again the God who has sent you. The less we understand, the more we need to know God.

Reflection

  • Have I treated my present difficulty as the final result of God’s work?
  • When disappointment makes it difficult for me to receive God’s Word, am I still willing to hold on to His promise?
  • Have I kept saying, “I cannot,” while forgetting that God says, “I am the LORD”?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, when I do not understand what You are doing, help me turn my eyes back to You, listen again to Your promises, and acknowledge that You are the faithful and almighty God. Even when I am weak, patiently lead me away from “I cannot” and back to “You are the LORD.” In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
