2026-06-02 Genesis 28 Walking the Path of Promise

Rev Xi An Poon

Today, Genesis 28 continues from what happened in Genesis 27, where Jacob received the blessing through deception.

Genesis 27 shows us that there were many areas of immaturity within this family. Isaac loved Esau, Rebekah loved Jacob; Jacob desired the blessing, but he used his own method to obtain it; Esau, after losing the blessing, was filled with bitterness and even wanted to kill Jacob.

So when we come to Genesis 28, Jacob was not leaving his father’s house in glory. He was leaving with family brokenness, the consequences of his own actions, uncertainty about the future, and fear in his heart. He set out from Beersheba toward Haran.

Many times, our lives may also come to such a place. Not every journey begins when we are strong, mature, and confident. Some journeys begin when we are still weak, still confused, and still unsure of what lies ahead, yet we have to keep walking.

But the most precious part of Genesis 28 is this: God did not wait until Jacob was fully mature or had everything right before He appeared to him. God met Jacob on the road, in his loneliness, confusion, and need for guidance. God reaffirmed His promise and assured Jacob of His presence.

This chapter shows us that even when human life has been messy, God’s promise remains firm. Even when a person walks into the unknown, heaven is not closed to him, and God is still with him on the road.

  1. Place the direction back into God’s hands

Genesis 28:3-4 “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. May He give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham…”

In Genesis 27, Isaac blessed Jacob while he was being deceived. But in Genesis 28, Isaac clearly knew that the person he was blessing was Jacob, and he formally passed on the blessing of Abraham to him.

This shows us that God’s promise is not fulfilled according to human preference, emotion, or arrangement, but according to God’s own choosing and faithfulness.

Esau saw that his father was displeased with the Canaanite women, so he married a daughter of Ishmael. This was an outward adjustment, but the Bible does not say that this changed the direction of God’s promise.

Human attempts to repair things cannot replace God’s promise, and human methods cannot produce God’s blessing. The first step in walking the path of promise is to place the direction back into God’s hands and allow Him to correct our hearts, our methods, and our way.

  1. See God’s presence on the road

Genesis 28:12-13 “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the LORD…”

Jacob left home. When night came, he took a stone for a pillow and lay down to sleep. It was a lonely scene. There was no family beside him, no comfortable bed, and no clear future before him.

But on that very night, God appeared to Jacob.

Jacob saw a stairway resting on the earth, reaching to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Through this, Jacob saw that heaven was not closed to him. God had not left his life. The road on earth was still under God’s rule.

God said to Jacob, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go… I will not leave you.”

This was the assurance Jacob needed most. He did not only need to know whether he would safely arrive in Haran. He needed to know that God was with him on the road he was walking.

Today, we may also be walking through difficult roads — in our family, work, health, relationships, or in the unknown areas of life. But God reminds us: heaven is not closed, God has not left, and He is still ruling, watching over, and leading us on the road.

  1. Respond to God’s promise with faith

Genesis 28:16-19 “When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’… He called that place Bethel.”

When Jacob woke up, he realized that the Lord was truly in that place. He took the stone he had used as a pillow, set it up as a pillar, poured oil on top of it, and called that place Bethel, which means “the house of God.”

This was the beginning of Jacob’s response to God. In the past, Jacob knew how to grasp, calculate, and use his own method to obtain what he wanted. But now, he began to learn how to respond to God’s revelation.

His faith was still growing, but God had already met him on the road and was beginning to teach him how to trust Him, know Him, and respond to Him.

Jacob changed the name of that place from Luz to Bethel. This shows that his perspective had changed. What was once only an ordinary place to sleep became the house of God because God appeared there. What was once a road of escape became a path of promise because of God’s word.

Conclusion

Genesis 28 shows us that God did not wait until Jacob had everything right before He was with him. While Jacob was still immature and still carrying brokenness on the road, God first appeared to him, first declared His promise, and first assured him of His presence.

God does not want us to remain in the places where we have gone wrong, fallen short, or felt immature. He wants us to see that even when our path has been messy, He can still meet us on the road and bring us back into His promise.

Today, let us bring our road before God. The places we want to control, the things we try to solve by ourselves, and the burdens we think we must carry alone can all be surrendered again to Him.

Because He says:

“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go… I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for speaking to us through Genesis 28. Thank You for showing us that although human life may carry brokenness, immaturity, confusion, and weakness, Your promise remains firm and Your presence remains real.

Lord, help us to place the direction of our lives back into Your hands. Help us not to rely only on our own methods to grasp blessing, and not to use outward repairs as a substitute for truly returning to You.

When we walk on an unknown road, open our eyes to see that You are still with us. When we feel lonely, uncertain, or unclear about what lies ahead, help us remember Your word: “I am with you.”

May You turn the “Luz” in our lives into “Bethel.” May the places we thought were ordinary, lonely, or difficult become places where we meet You, know You, and respond to You.

From today onward, may we no longer rely on our own methods to grasp blessing, but walk in Your presence on the path of Your promise.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.

Genesis 28

1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.

3 “May God Almighty bless you,
And make you fruitful and multiply you,
That you may be an assembly of peoples;
4 And give you the blessing of Abraham,
To you and your descendants with you,
That you may inherit the land
In which you are a stranger,
Which God gave to Abraham.”

5 So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram. 8 Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac. 9 So Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition to the wives he had.

10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, 21 so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. 22 And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
