【Key Scripture】
Genesis 23:4-6
4 “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
6 “Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead.”
Dear family, peace to you.
Yesterday, in Genesis 22, we saw Abraham standing in a very deep place of faith. God tested him by asking him to offer Isaac, but at the most critical moment, God Himself provided the ram. Abraham experienced the Lord as “Jehovah Jireh” — the Lord will provide.
But when we come to Genesis 23, the scene suddenly changes. It becomes quiet, real, and painful. Sarah passed away.
Abraham had just experienced the confirmation of God’s promise, yet now he had to face the sorrow of losing his wife. This reminds us that the journey of faith is not only about victory on the mountain; it also includes tears, loss, and waiting.
In this chapter, Abraham said, “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you.” In reality, he still had no land in Canaan. He had no permanent possession, no visible inheritance, and nothing outward that could fully settle his heart.
But what is very powerful is that the sons of Heth said to him, “You are a mighty prince among us.” Abraham saw himself as a foreigner and a visitor, but others saw dignity, weight, and the mark of God’s presence upon his life.
This is also something we often struggle with as we follow God. Sometimes we feel we are still waiting, still unsettled, and still not fully possessing what God has promised. But God reminds us that true dignity does not come from how much we already possess outwardly, but from whether we are living in His promise and His presence.
Later, Abraham insisted on paying the full price for the cave of Machpelah. He did not rely on human pity, nor did he accept a vague favour. He purchased the land legally, publicly, and clearly. This showed that he believed God’s promise, and he wanted to receive God’s blessing with integrity.
Today, let us reflect on three ways God forms our lives while we are waiting.
- In waiting, see again the dignity God has placed upon you
Genesis 23:4
“I am a foreigner and a visitor among you.”
Abraham honestly acknowledged his situation. He knew he was still living as a foreigner and had not yet fully received the land God had promised.
Waiting can easily make us feel unstable. When things have not yet happened, when answers have not yet come, we may begin to look down on ourselves. We may feel that we have no foundation, no security, and no real weight.
But Genesis 23:6 says:
“You are a mighty prince among us.”
Although Abraham did not yet own the land, his life carried the mark of God’s presence. This reminds us that a person’s true dignity does not come from outward possessions, but from the identity God has placed upon his life.
1 Peter 2:9
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people…”
Today, even while we are still waiting, we must not allow lack to define us. God wants us to remember that we belong to Him. Our dignity comes from His calling and His presence.
- In waiting, stand first on God’s promise
Genesis 23:8-9
“If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has…”
After Sarah passed away, Abraham did not take her back to his former homeland to bury her. Instead, he chose to buy a burial place in Canaan, the land God had promised.
This was not just a funeral arrangement. It was a declaration of faith. Although Abraham had not yet received the whole land, he first stood on one small part of the promised land.
From a human point of view, the cave of Machpelah was only a burial place. But from the perspective of faith, it was the first legal possession Abraham had in the promised land.
Hebrews 11:9-10
“By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents… for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
Many times, God’s promise is not fulfilled all at once. He may first give us one small step, one beginning, one place where we can stand. If that step is in the direction of God’s promise, then it is not a small thing.
Today, let us not go back to our old sense of security just because we have not yet seen everything fulfilled. Let us stand, even in waiting, on what God has already spoken.
- In waiting, receive God’s blessing with integrity
Genesis 23:13
“And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, ‘If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there.’”
At first, Ephron seemed willing to give the field and the cave to Abraham. But Abraham did not accept a vague favour. He insisted on paying the price, and he completed the transaction publicly before the people.
Genesis 23:16
“And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.”
Abraham knew that this land was connected to God’s promise. He did not want anyone to say later, “We gave this to you.” He did not want human favour to confuse the work of God, nor did he want human claims to damage the glory of God.
This also reminds us of Genesis 14, when Abraham refused the possessions of the king of Sodom, because he did not want anyone to say, “I have made Abram rich.”
Psalm 84:11
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
In waiting, people can easily become anxious. When we are anxious, we may be tempted to use human methods, unclear arrangements, or grey areas to help God’s promise happen faster.
But Abraham reminds us that a person who truly trusts God does not only believe that God will give; he also believes that God can give in a righteous and upright way.
【Summary】
Genesis 23 shows us that waiting is not a place where life stops. Waiting is a place where God forms our lives.
Abraham was still a foreigner, yet he did not lose his dignity.
Abraham had not yet received the whole land, yet he first stood on God’s promise.
Abraham could have accepted human favour, yet he chose to receive God’s blessing with integrity.
This is a life formed in waiting.
True waiting is not passive, helpless, or empty. True waiting means that before God’s promise is fully fulfilled, we still know who we are, we still believe what God has spoken, and we still keep our lives clean and upright before Him.
【Reflection】
Today, let us reflect before God:
- Have I looked down on myself because I have not yet fully received what I am waiting for?
- Have I wanted to return to old forms of security because the waiting has felt too long?
- Have I accepted unclear or unhealthy ways because I wanted the result to come faster?
- Have I forgotten that God is forming my life in the waiting?
【Prayer】
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You.
Thank You for speaking to us through Genesis 23. Through Abraham’s life, we see what it means to live faithfully while waiting. Although he was a foreigner, he carried dignity in You. Although he had not yet received the whole land, he still stood on Your promise. Although he could have accepted human favour, he chose to receive Your blessing in a clean and upright way.
Lord, we confess that many times we become weak in waiting. When things have not yet happened, when our circumstances are not yet settled, we can become anxious. We may look down on ourselves, or we may try to use our own ways to hold on to the result.
Please restore our vision. Help us not to focus only on what we do not yet have, but to see who we are in You.
Help us to stand on Your promise while we wait. Even if we can only see one small step, help us to obey. Even if we only hold one small piece of ground, help us to believe that Your word will continue to be fulfilled.
Please also guard our hearts. Keep us from unclear ways, from human manipulation, and from losing integrity because we are impatient.
Holy Spirit, please enter into our waiting. Settle our hearts, restore our identity, strengthen our faith, and purify our motives. Let us not be consumed by waiting, but be formed by You in the waiting, becoming more mature, more stable, and more ready to receive Your promise.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Genesis 23
1 Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
3 Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4 “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, 6 “Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead.”
7 Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. 8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, 9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you.”
10 Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying, 11 “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!”
12 Then Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land; 13 and he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If you will give it, please hear me. I will give you money for the field; take it from me and I will bury my dead there.”
14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 “My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead.” 16 And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.
17 So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.
