Dear family, peace to you.
Today, as we read Genesis 14, we see two very different paths through the lives of Abram and Lot.
In Genesis 13, Lot chose the plain of the Jordan because it looked fertile, prosperous, and full of opportunity. But in Genesis 14, Lot was already living in Sodom. When Sodom was drawn into the war of the kings, Lot was also captured, together with his family and possessions.
This reminds us that not every path that looks good is truly under God’s leading. When people make choices only by what they see, feel, or desire, they may think they are gaining the world, but in the end they may be drawn into the world’s troubles.
Abram was different. The Bible calls him “Abram the Hebrew.” He was still living like a sojourner, staying near the great trees of Mamre and waiting for God’s leading. He did not rush to build his own kingdom or grasp what the world could offer. Yet God was building strength in his life. Abram had relationships, alliances, trained men in his household, and the ability to rise up in a crisis to rescue Lot.
Today, God reminds us through this chapter:
- Do not choose only by what you see
Scripture: Genesis 13:10-11
Lot saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered, so he chose to move there. But he did not see the danger behind Sodom.
When we make decisions, we should not only ask, “Will this benefit me?” We must also ask, “Is this under God’s leading?”
We should not only ask, “Does this path bring gain?” We must also ask, “Will this path lead my heart closer to God, or further away from Him?”
- Be built up under God’s leading
Scripture: Genesis 14:13-14
Abram seemed not to have taken the best land. He still lived like a sojourner. But under God’s leading, his life was being built up. He had relationships, preparation, responsibility, and the ability to rise up in a crisis to rescue Lot.
Trusting God does not mean doing nothing. It means being faithful in the place God has given us, allowing Him to build our life, family, relationships, and capacity to carry responsibility.
When God’s time comes, we will be able to stand, and we will also become a blessing to others.
- Give glory to God after victory
Scripture: Genesis 14:18-20
After Abram rescued Lot, Melchizedek came out and blessed him. He declared that it was “God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth” who had delivered Abram’s enemies into his hand.
Abram also gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything, acknowledging that every victory and every blessing came from God.
Later, the king of Sodom wanted to give Abram the goods, but Abram refused. He did not want anyone to say, “I made Abram rich.”
A person who chooses the right path of life does not only depend on God in difficulty, but also gives glory to God after victory.
Summary:
Genesis 14 shows us that Lot chose by sight. He seemed to gain the best place, but in the end he was drawn into the conflict of Sodom. Abram chose to remain under God’s leading. He still looked like a sojourner, yet God built him up, enabled him to rescue others, and kept his heart clear after victory.
The truly blessed path is not always the path that looks most profitable at first. It is the path where God is present. When we choose to remain under God’s leading, He builds us up so that we can stand, protect our family, and become a blessing to others.
Today, let us reflect:
Am I sometimes like Lot, looking only at what seems good in front of me, without discerning where this path will lead me?
Do I make decisions too quickly by feelings, benefit, or convenience, without seeking God’s leading?
Am I willing to be like Abram, trusting God’s promise even when I still seem to be living like a sojourner?
Am I willing to be built up in the place God has given me, so that my life can stand firm and become a blessing to my family and others?
Prayer:
Father, please help us not to choose only by what we see. Do not let us be led by temporary benefits or the attractions of the world.
Help us to be like Abram, staying under Your leading by faith. Even when the path seems slower, teach us to believe that true blessing is found in Your presence.
Lord, build faith, relationships, responsibility, and discernment in our lives. Help us to protect our families and become a blessing to others in times of crisis.
When we experience victory, blessing, or breakthrough, please guard our hearts. Keep us from pride, greed, and forgetfulness. Let us always remember that the One who makes us rich and enables us to stand is God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Genesis 14
1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness. 7 Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.
8 And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains. 11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram. 14 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. 16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.
18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”
And he gave him a tithe of all.
21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— 24 except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”
