2026-05-11 Genesis 12 Walk Forward in God’s Leading

Rev Xi An Poon

放下原本的依附,聽見神的呼召;
走到每一個地方,都重新築壇敬拜;

Dear family, peace to you.

Today, as we read Genesis 12, we see a very important turning point

From Genesis 1 to 11, we see that after humanity fell into sin, people increasingly tried to build their own sense of security. By the time of the Tower of Babel, they said, “Let us build ourselves a city and a tower… and make a name for ourselves.” People wanted to depend on their own strength, their own community, and their own methods to build a life that did not need to rely on God.

But in Genesis 12, God called Abram to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household, and to go to the land God would show him. This was a journey of faith. It was not based on what he could see, not based on earthly security, and not based on the things he used to depend on. Abram had to learn to walk step by step under God’s personal leading.

After Abram entered Canaan, he first came to Shechem, where the Lord appeared to him, and Abram built an altar there. Later, he moved to the hills between Bethel and Ai, and there he built another altar and called on the name of the Lord.

This shows us that a person who walks by faith does not only move forward physically. At every new place and every new stage, he learns to worship God again, depend on God again, and seek God again.

But in Genesis 12:9, the Bible says that Abram “set out and continued toward the Negev.” Then the land experienced a famine, and Abram went down to Egypt. This reminds us that when life seems to become smoother, when we feel more experienced, and when we think we know the way forward, we may easily begin to ask God less and depend more on our own judgement and methods.

Today, through Abram’s journey, God reminds us: faith is not depending on God at the beginning and then depending on ourselves later. Faith means returning to God at every step and allowing Him to lead us personally.

  1. Let Go of Old Dependence and Hear God’s Call

God said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household.”

This was not only about leaving a place. It was about leaving old dependence. For Abram, his country, his people, and his father’s household represented security, identity, protection, and future.

Today, we also need to ask ourselves: What am I depending on most deeply? Is it people? Is it experience? Is it my own methods? Is it past success? Is it the things I can control?

God is not trying to take away our security. He wants us to place our true security back in Him.

  1. Wherever You Go, Build an Altar There

When Abram came to Shechem, the Lord appeared to him, and he built an altar there. Later, when he came between Bethel and Ai, he built another altar and called on the name of the Lord.

An altar represents worship. It also means bringing that place before God again.

In every new stage of life, we also need to build an altar. A new family situation, new work pressure, new relationship challenge, or new responsibility cannot be handled only by planning and methods. We need to bring these things before God first.

A person who walks by faith does not only ask, “Where is the next step?” He also asks, “Am I depending on God again in this step?”

  1. The Smoother the Journey Feels, the More We Must Return to God

Abram continued toward the Negev, and later, because of famine, he went down to Egypt. This part of the passage reminds us that people do not only forget God in difficult times. Sometimes we forget God when we become more familiar with the road, more experienced, and more confident in our own ability.

When the famine came, Abram went down to Egypt. Later, because of fear, he used his own method to protect himself. This revealed the fear and weakness still inside him.

This is not to condemn Abram. It is to remind us that even the father of faith still needed to be shaped by God. When we face pressure, lack, relationship difficulties, or situations that we cannot solve, we should not immediately look for our own “Egypt.” We must first return to God.

We need to ask God for supernatural intervention in impossible situations. We need His supernatural intervention in relationships. When human methods come to an end, we need to see that this is His way, His work, and His personal leading.

Summary

Genesis 12 reminds us that God did not call Abram to build his own city or make his own name. God called him to walk in the path of God’s personal leading.

Today, we also need to learn:

Let go of old dependence and hear God’s call.
Wherever we go, build an altar and worship God again.
The smoother the journey feels, the more we must return to God.

The journey of faith does not mean there will be no difficulties or weaknesses. It means that in every stage, we allow God to take His rightful place again.

Life Reflection

Today, let us reflect before God:

Am I truly depending on God, or am I depending on my familiar methods?

In this new stage, am I only busy arranging things, or have I first built an altar and called on God?

When I face pressure and difficulty, do I seek God first, or do I look for my own “Egypt”?

Do I still believe that where human beings have no way, God can still intervene supernaturally?

Prayer

Father, we thank You because You are the God who personally calls us and personally leads us.

Help us to let go of the wrong things we depend on. Teach us not to build our security on ourselves, but to place our lives back into Your hands.

Lord, wherever we go and whatever stage we enter, help us to build an altar there, worship You again, and call on Your name.

When we face famine, pressure, relationship difficulties, and situations that human strength cannot solve, please intervene personally. Let us see that this is not man’s method, but Your method; not man’s work, but Your work.

Lead us forward in Your personal guidance, so that our lives may become a vessel of blessing to others.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Genesis 12

Now the Lord had said to Abram:

“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

4 So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. 9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”

14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.
