Dear family, peace to you.
As we move from Genesis 4 into Genesis 5, we see a very important turning point.
Genesis 4 shows us how sin entered the human family. Cain killed Abel, and the first family experienced bloodshed, loss, and brokenness. Sin did not only damage man’s relationship with God; it also affected emotions, relationships, and the next generation.
But Genesis 5 does not begin by focusing on human failure. It brings our eyes back to God’s original intention. The Scripture reminds us that God created man in His own likeness, created male and female, blessed them, and called them Man.
This means that even though sin had entered the world, and death had become part of human history, God’s original heart for mankind had not changed. Human beings were still created in God’s image. Human beings were still valued and blessed by God.
Yet verse 3 also shows us another reality. Adam had a son in his own likeness, after his image. This means that mankind still carries the dignity of God’s creation, but also carries the condition of life after Adam’s sin. The image of God remains, but the effect of sin is also real.
The birth of Seth is therefore a sign of grace. Abel was killed, Cain departed, and a deep gap was left in the family. But God did not allow that gap to become the final ending. He gave Seth, so that life could continue and God’s blessing would not stop because of human failure.
Genesis 5 is not just a genealogy. It repeatedly says, “and he died,” showing us that sin brought death. But it also repeatedly records that they “begot sons and daughters,” showing us that God still allowed life, hope, and blessing to continue.
Today, God reminds us: human brokenness is real, but His grace is more real. Sin brings death, but God still continues life and blessing in the midst of death.
【1. Return to God’s Original Perspective】
Genesis 5:1-2 reminds us that when God created man, He made him in His own likeness, created male and female, blessed them, and called them Man.
This brings us back to the true starting point of human life. God does not first show us human failure, but human origin. He does not first show us sin, but identity. He does not first show us death, but blessing.
This also echoes Genesis 1:27-28, where God created man in His image and blessed mankind. This helps us understand what Genesis 5 means when it says mankind was made “in the likeness of God.”
Many times, we look at ourselves from the place of failure. We look at our families from the place of problems. We look at the next generation from the place of worry. We look at the future from the place of pressure.
But God looks at mankind from creation, image, and blessing.
This does not mean denying our problems. It means restoring the right starting point. If we only look at life through sin and brokenness, we will easily fall into discouragement and powerlessness. But when we return to God’s original perspective, we begin to understand: my life is not defined by failure, my family is not defined by brokenness, and the next generation is not defined by the present situation.
God still values the people He created. God still remembers His original blessing.
When we return to God’s perspective, we will have strength to face deeper issues in life, allowing Him not only to change our outward behavior, but also to heal the broken places within us.
【2. Let God Heal the Brokenness Left by Sin】
Genesis 5:3 says that Adam had a son “in his own likeness, after his image,” and named him Seth.
This is very real. Adam was created in the image and likeness of God, but after Adam sinned, his descendants also carried the effect of his fallen condition. Mankind still bears God’s image, yet also carries the impact of sin.
Genesis 5 also repeats the phrase “and he died.” This shows us that sin is not without consequence. Sin entered the world, and death entered human history. Romans 5:12 helps us understand this spiritual reality: “Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin.”
Therefore, receiving God’s blessing cannot remain only as a positive declaration. We also need to let God heal the brokenness that sin has left in our lives.
Death is not only physical death. It can also appear in relationships, emotions, families, faith, and hope. A person may still be living outwardly, but inwardly has lost hope. A family may still be functioning outwardly, but still carry wounds that have never been healed. A person may still be responsible and hardworking, but deep inside may be bound by fear, unbelief, or avoidance.
But God does not want us to live in condemnation. He wants us to live in the light. Grace does not mean pretending there is no problem. Grace gives us courage to bring our lives before God.
When God shines His light on us, He is not trying to shame us. He is setting us free. He is not condemning us. He is bringing us out from the influence of sin and death.
When we allow God to heal us, the hidden power of sin begins to lose its grip. Grace begins to enter. Death no longer continues to secretly control our lives.
God heals us not only so that we may be comforted, but also so that blessing can continue through us.
【3. Receive the Blessing of Life in Grace】
Although Genesis 5 speaks many times about death, it also repeatedly says that they “begot sons and daughters.” This shows us that even though sin had entered, God still allowed life to continue. Even though death had become a reality, God still allowed blessing and hope to continue through the generations.
The birth of Seth was a continuation of grace. Abel was killed, Cain departed, and the family lost a life and a sense of wholeness. But God gave Seth, not because man deserved it, but because His grace was still at work. God brought a new continuation in the middle of brokenness.
At the end of Genesis 5, Lamech named his son Noah and said, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands.” This shows us that God not only allowed life to continue, but also prepared comfort and hope through the next generation.
Today, many people see raising the next generation as a burden, pressure, or limitation. Of course, raising children and building the next generation involves responsibility and real challenges. But from the perspective of Genesis 5, the continuation of life is not merely a burden. It is part of God’s blessing.
The next generation is not a trouble, but an inheritance entrusted by God. This applies not only to physical children, but also to spiritual sons and daughters, young people, family members, co-workers, and the people God places around us.
God does not want us to look at them only through their problems. He wants us to see that His blessing, faith, mission, and hope can continue through them.
God is calling us not to remain in disappointment, not to see the next generation as a burden, and not to see family responsibility as only a heavy weight. He wants us to see again that His blessing is still continuing, His grace can still fill the gap, and His promise has not changed.
Genesis 5 shows us a deep truth: sin entered the world, and death entered human history; but God’s original intention for mankind did not change. Human beings are still created in God’s image, still valued by God, and still blessed by God.
Adam’s descendants carried both the dignity of God’s creation and the weakness that came after sin. This is the real condition of mankind. But God did not stop His grace because of human failure.
After Abel was killed and Cain departed, God gave Seth. In a genealogy where generation after generation “died,” God still allowed people to “beget sons and daughters.” In a land of toil and curse, God still prepared comfort and hope.
So today, let us return to God’s original perspective, allow God to heal the brokenness left by sin, and receive the blessing of life in grace. God’s blessing has not ended because of human failure. God’s promise has not changed because of human weakness.
Today, let us quietly respond before God:
Am I still defining myself by past failure, family brokenness, or personal weakness, and forgetting God’s original perspective toward me?
Am I willing to let God gently shine His light and heal the effects of sin in my life, so that I will no longer pass on wounds, fear, or unbelief?
Am I willing to see my family, the next generation, and the people around me again in grace — not as burdens, but as places where God has entrusted me to receive blessing and bring forth hope?
【Prayer】
Father, we thank You.
You created mankind in Your own image. You blessed us and called us Man. Even though sin entered the world and death entered human history, Your original intention has not changed, and Your grace has not stopped.
Lord, help us return to Your perspective. Let us no longer be defined by past failure, family brokenness, or personal weakness. Shine Your light upon us and heal the places within us that have been affected by sin, so that we will no longer pass on wounds and darkness, but allow Your grace to work in our lives again.
Lord, help us receive blessing in grace. Let us see our families, the next generation, and the people around us as lives entrusted by You. May You bring comfort in our toil, restoration in our brokenness, and blessing and hope through our generation.
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Genesis 5
This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died.
12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed.” 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.
32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
