2026-04-21 Psalm 13 When the Heart Turns, Strength Returns

Rev Xi An Poon

Today Psalm 13 shows us that when a person loses strength, it is often not only because the situation is difficult, but because the heart has remained in that difficulty for too long. When we cannot see God’s presence, cannot see His protection, and cannot see any change in our circumstances, our heart can easily begin to stir within us. We start calculating, worrying, and sinking under negative thoughts and pressure.

This was David’s condition at the beginning of the psalm. He felt as if God had forgotten him. He felt as if God had hidden His face from him. On the outside, he was under pressure from his enemies. On the inside, his heart was filled with sorrow and turmoil. But what is precious is this: David did not allow himself to remain there. Step by step, he turned his heart back to God, and in the end, joy, song, and strength returned.

Today God is reminding us of the same truth: when the heart turns back to God, strength returns.

  1. Do not let your heart remain trapped

“How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart daily?…
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?”
Psalm 13:2

Many times, we are not defeated in a single moment by the situation itself. Rather, our heart stays too long in that place of pressure. We keep thinking, keep analyzing, keep watching the situation, and keep dwelling on what others are doing. In the end, our inner strength slowly drains away.

Today God is not asking us to deny our pain, nor to pretend that everything is fine. But He is reminding us not to let our heart remain trapped there. You may admit that you are tired. You may admit that you are under pressure. But do not let that difficulty become the final voice within you.

  1. Turn your heart back into God’s light

“Consider and hear me, O Lord my God;
Enlighten my eyes…”
Psalm 13:3

David did not stay in his feelings. He began to call on God again. He said, “O Lord my God.” This is a very important turning point. Although his circumstances had not changed yet, his heart had begun to return to God.

When a person keeps looking at the situation, his vision becomes darkened. But when he turns back to God, his eyes begin to see clearly again. Today we also need to pray this way: Lord, look upon me. Answer me. Enlighten my eyes. When God’s light comes in, we no longer see only impossibility, and we no longer see only our weakness. We begin to see again that God is still with us, still reigning, and still leading us.

  1. Let your heart rest in God’s mercy

“But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.”
Psalm 13:5

True recovery does not begin only when everything changes around us. It begins when the heart learns to rest again in God’s mercy. In the end, David did not hold on to his circumstances; he held on to God’s mercy. He did not wait until every problem was solved before receiving strength. Rather, he first placed his heart in God’s grace, and then joy returned, and song returned.

If our heart keeps holding on to negativity, feelings, and anxiety, we will become weaker and weaker. But when our heart begins to hold on to God’s mercy, His salvation, and the truth that He deals bountifully with us, strength begins to return.

Brothers and sisters, perhaps your circumstances have not changed yet today, but your heart can turn back first. Do not let your heart remain trapped. Turn your heart back into God’s light, and let your heart rest in His mercy. When the heart turns back to God, strength returns.

Prayer:
Lord, when my heart is trapped by circumstances, pulled down by negative feelings, and weighed down by sorrow, do not let me remain there. Enlighten my eyes so that I may see again that You are still with me and still watching over me. Bring my heart back into Your mercy, and restore to me joy, hope, and strength again. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Psalm 13

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart daily?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and hear me, O Lord my God;
Enlighten my eyes,
Lest I sleep the sleep of death;
4 Lest my enemy say,
“I have prevailed against him”;
Lest those who trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
5 But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
