Rev Daniel Poon
During the Ten Days of Awe, we reflect on Genesis 22, where God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham responds not with hesitation but with immediate obedience, rising early to follow God’s command. His spiritual sensitivity leads to divine provision and a renewed promise: “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 22:18, NKJV). This passage reveals a powerful principle—when the spirit leads, grace flows.
Hear God’s Voice – The Spirit Must Awaken
God calls Abraham, and he responds instantly, “Here I am.” This reply comes from his spirit, not his emotions or logic. A spiritually awakened heart hears God clearly, while a dormant spirit defaults to human reasoning. To walk in God’s will, our spirit must be alert and ready to respond.
Obey Quickly – Spirit Leads the Soul and Body
Abraham rises early and obeys without delay. Morning is a sacred time to awaken our spirit and align with God. When the spirit leads, the soul (mind, emotions, will) and body follow. This is why daily devotionals like the “Father’s Table” are encouraged—to feed the spirit first. Doing so helps us resist emotional impulses and physical distractions, allowing us to walk in obedience.
Why Was Abraham’s Spirit So Sensitive?
Three key habits shaped Abraham’s spiritual responsiveness:
- He walked closely with God: From Genesis 12 onward, Abraham built altars and called on God’s name.
- He trusted God’s promises: Witnessing Isaac’s miraculous birth strengthened his faith.
- He practiced obedience: Leaving his homeland and obeying in small steps trained his spirit to respond quickly.
To cultivate a sensitive spirit, we must stay close to God, build faith through His Word, and obey consistently—even in small things.
Experience God’s Provision – Grace Flows
As Abraham prepares to sacrifice Isaac, God provides a ram caught in a thicket. Abraham names the place “The-LORD-Will-Provide” (Jehovah Jireh). This moment of divine provision is not just for the present—it unlocks generational blessings. God reaffirms His covenant: Abraham’s descendants will be numerous, victorious, and a blessing to all nations. When the spirit leads, we don’t face loss—we step into greater grace.
