V1-5 The Kindness of the World Brings Nightmare
V1-2 ‘It happened after this that the king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon.’ David was able to live out the Father’s love and bless others with the Father’s kindness, but when he did not live in God’s Will, he would not be able to continue living in the glorious life. David wanted to show his kindness to the son of the Ammonite king, because the king had helped David in the past. But was what David did really according to the Will of God? David should not be going to the Ammonites in the first place! God was able to save David, but David chose to rely on people. David had an orphan heart, when Saul was chasing after him, David panicked, he forgot God had already anointed him to be the king of Israel, he only wanted to run away.
V3-5 ‘And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, at their buttocks, and sent them away. When they told David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”’
It seemed like common sense for David to repay the kindness of the Ammonites, but when we looked in the Bible, Moses told the Israelites long ago not to associate with the Ammonites. How well do we know the Word of God? We are so easy to follow the world’s rules to live and to act, but we know so little about the Word of God! When David went to the Ammonites, did he ask God? There was no record about this. When we make decisions and take actions according to the worldly values, do we ask God? Do we receive confirmation from God? David’s kindness towards the Ammonites led to a disaster. David thought the people of Ammon would appreciate his kindness, but they didn’t. When we don’t seek God, when we don’t walk in the way of God, when we don’t examine the Will of God, then we won’t be able to bring blessings and transformation. On the other hand, we may bring the negative result. We have the heart to help, but when we don’t walk in the Will of God, then our kindness become the nightmare of others.
V6-19 Make Mistakes Again and Again
V6-8 ‘When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of Maacah one thousand men, and from Ish-Tob twelve thousand men. Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.’ David was going to show kindness to the people of Ammon, but when they raised up to attack him, David fought back. His kindness was the kindness of the world, whereas when we see Jesus Christ, when He was ashamed and beaten, He asked the Father for forgiveness of the people. This is the difference between the kindness of people and kindness of God.
V9-12 ‘When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, that he might set them in battle array against the people of Ammon. Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”’ We show kindness with expectation of the same kindness in return, we thought whatever we do to others, they will also do the same to us. On the other hand, when people attack us, we will also want to fight back, we are hurt so we want to hurt people. We don’t know that we are blind, this is not God’s Will, He didn’t create us to let out of our emotions like this!
V13-14 ‘So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to Jerusalem.’ The Bible taught us to come to God with all our burdens and anger. We thought we are our own god, when we are angry and upset, we hurt ourselves, we hurt others, we throw things around, because we want others to see how upset we are. We must come to God with all our burdens and all our emotions. When Hannah was in destress, she didn’t throw things around, she didn’t hurt herself or others, instead, she came to the Temple of God, to cry and to pray to God. Even the priest, Eli, thought she was drunk. Hannah didn’t care how others think, she only wanted to come closer to God. Only when we are willing to open ourselves to God, to cast our burdens to Him, then He can help us and deliver us. David was upset about the people of Ammon, his kindness was from the world and from the flesh. He didn’t receive the same kindness he expected, and therefore he drew out his sword.
V15-19 ‘When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. Then Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River, and they came to Helam. And Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him. Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there. And when all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.’
David had walked further and further from God, he forgot the love of God. Do we really know God’s Will and walk in God’s Way? God never wanted to judge David, God never wanted to judge Saul, they brought their failures upon themselves. Through their lives, God is teaching us today, where is our love from? Do we love and show kindness only to have the same treatment from others in return? Or do we really know the kindness and love of God, and can show the same to others?
