Luke 12:13-21

Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

1. Greedy people cannot enter the kingdom of God

Jesus taught the disciples not to worry and not to be afraid, because God’s with them. But suddenly this person came to Jesus and asked to divide the inheritance for him and his brothers. Jesus told them to be extra careful and to watch out for greed. What is greed? It’s to want more. We tend to hold onto things in our hands and won’t let go. But Jesus said to get rid of all the greed because life is not about what we own. Our meaning and values of lives are not about our wealth. Imagine if we have a lot, and we lean on what we have and what we earn, but can this really satisfy us and give us joy? Everything we have is from God, and our lives are from God, He gives and takes away, what can we rely on in this world?

2. Kingdom people do not worry about life

Life does not consist in abundance provision. We must be rich towards God, not towards the world. Being greedy is not about our character, since we were young, we tend to want more, to grab more, to hold onto more. Our parents educate us not to be greedy, but it’s not about our character, but the direction we move towards. When we go towards the world, we will be more and more greedy and we will go further and further from God. When we choose God, when we trust God will provide us, when we believe that those who seek God will lack nothing, then we will draw closer to God. Those who are greedy cannot enter the Kingdom of God, because the direction is different. What is our life direction?
