Deuteronomy 2 – The Lessons in the Wilderness

Rev Daniel Xi An Poon

We’re the new generations, just like the Israelites, who Moses were talking to, who would enter the Promised Land because of everything the people had done for them in the past. Moses was giving them a lesson in the wilderness.

Section One V1-3 The Lesson of Turning and Skirting

The path we will walk is not a straight path, there will be turning, going around and skirting. When we cannot listen to God and when we cannot learn the lessons from God, then God will teach us by letting us staying in the same place. During this time of skirting around, we will feel tired and weary, we will need to let go of ourselves, and we will not feeling like we’re going forward.

This is the end time, we will face trials and hardship, God wants us to disciple the nations and fight with the world. Therefore we must learn to let go of ourselves and be trained by God. Without this training we cannot win the battle. Let go of all our fear and unwillingness, stop asking why, and learn this lessons from God.

Section Two V4-23 The Lesson of Obedience

God was talking to the new generation Israelites about what their forefathers did and what they experienced. Not only they should know but they also should walk the same path. When they heard about it they would be afraid, when they knew that they would go through the land of Esau and they could not take any land they would be unwilling and afraid.

But this is the lesson from God, because whatever God gives to us will be different to whatever God gives to others. God tells us not to be afraid, we might be passing other people’s land and inheritance, we might want to have what others have, but our portions are different to the portions God have to others. God told us to guard our hearts and to watch ourselves.

God sees into our hearts, are we really obedient and submissive? God wants us to be completely humble to His teaching, whatever God gives to others we should not take, even their water we should not drink. Are we willing to learn obedience? To be willing to let go and let God, move forward and receive the land as inheritance?

We must keep moving, let God lead us wherever we go, no matter if we go forward or skirt in circles. As long as we are moving, God will continue to lead us. But if we stop moving then we’ll never receive the land as inheritance.

Section Three V24-37 Humble and Listen to the Word of God

What’s really inside our hearts? What are we really thinking? We might look submissive and we might carry out the orders from God and from our authority, but in our hearts we are unwilling. There are so many unpleasant things going through our mind, there is anger and there is bitterness.

Being humble is from inside to outside. The Israelites would not be happy to only passing the land of their enemy, and not doing anything else. But it’s just like Jesus, who did not want to go on the cross but He was fully submissive to the Father. What’s our attitude towards our enemy and those who dislike us?

Our love should not only be for those who like us, but should be from God, also for those we cannot love. When we are humble and listen to the Word of God, then we will eventually receive our portions.
